In basketball, a backboard is the flat, rigid surface behind the basketball hoop to which the rim is attached. It's typically rectangular and made of materials like tempered glass or Plexiglas. The backboard's primary purpose is to provide a surface for the ball to bounce off of during shots, especially bank shots, and to prevent interference from spectators.
